The United States and the United Arab Emirates have imposed tougher financial sanctions on Pakistan for backing a militant group which they blame for last year's nuclear tests, in a move they say threatens Pakistan's security interests.

Pakistani security officials say the military has intensified raids since Sunday against targets in Afghanistan and that at least three people including two schoolgirls have been killed.

Pakistan's military chief, General Raheel Sharif, told U.S. lawmakers on Tuesday that Islamabad was responding to a growing threat to its national security by supporting militants.

"We can see that as a rise in insecurity with the growing presence of terrorists in the region," General Sharif told the Joint House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing on "Countering the Proliferation of Nuclear and Chemical Weapons".

The U.S. president, Barack Obama, asked Pakistani Deputy Defense Minister Major General Nafees Zakaria to testify on Pakistan's security situation in the wake of the latest attack in Pakistan.

General Zakaria said the government was "concerned" that military attacks against Pakistani targets were taking place, and that he would share his findings with the president.

"We need to know what the threat is to the security of Pakistan," he added.

Since Saturday, at least 36 alleged militants were killed in cross-border attacks across Pakistan. Some of them were allegedly killed by cross-border operations conducted by Pakistani soldiers, U.S. officials said.

Pakistan's Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said the country had "stopped the growth of cross-border operations" which had led to hundreds of attacks and deaths since the bombings.

Separately, militants said they struck on Tuesday at a special base used by the United States, Saudi Arabia and their coalition partners in fighting the Islamic State group in Yemen. The two countries are seeking to combat a Houthi Shi'ite movement fighting President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

At least 21 people were killed and 45 wounded in Tuesday's attacks. At least 11 Pakistanis also suffered gunshot wounds.

Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency said the attacks were carried out by two men from a suspected Taliban group and targeted the base where U.S.-led coalition partners and their allied Arab and Yemeni forces are based.

Man appears in court charged with wifes murder, robbery and sexual assault of 11 women, six teens

'The defendant is the same person I have known all my life,' he said. 'He's a young person that does not care about his own well-being and lives for other people.'

'I understand he's remorseful.'

The man was arraigned in court Tuesday and was issued no bond.

He had pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree robbery and one count of unlawful sexual contact.

The victim's remains were discovered the morning of July 30 in a remote area of the town, and the woman's remains were found a day later by a pair of hunters on farmland.

An Amber Alert was issued after 13 children were reported missing, the children all believed to have been kidnapped in the area, and the search for the missing has focused on the area where the body was found.

The 17-year-old suspect told investigators he was abducted from the victim's home in the 2200 block of West St Clair Ave in the village of Doylestown on July 31 and held for nine days.

He then moved into the home of his grandmother, but the investigation into her death was continuing.

The suspect was placed in the custody of the Hennepin County Medical Examiner, who will determine if an autopsy is necessary.

'As I see it, we don't have any idea at this point if this is the same person,' prosecutor Matt Kalkanis told reporters in court.

The 19-year-old woman was found dead from a single gunshot wound to the head after authorities tried to question him at a convenience store and after taking him into custody in St. Croix County.

Authorities say there is no evidence that the victim knew the suspect or had any kind of relationship with him, but investigators were still exploring whether he was the person who shot and killed the grandmother.
